A short story on Marriage and infidelity by Jimmy Etinyene
I sat at the edge of the bed watching him get ready for work…at least that’s what he says every Saturday morning even though I know he’s lying. I should say something, why can’t I say anything? I bite my lower lip as he puts on his shoes and I get up to arrange his briefcase like I always do, he says I’m great at organizing. When is it okay to confront your husband of ten years for cheating?
When can I throw the truth at his face and tell him I know everything? I swallowed my words as he kissed my forehead and said he’ll be home late. “As usual,” I said, “oh come on baby, you know I’m gunning for a promotion” he said as he kissed me, I nodded and looked in his eyes to see if I’d catch a glimpse of remorse, but alas nothing. For how long will I keep fighting alone? I thought as he walked out the door.
Over the years, our marriage has been somewhat blissful with the occasional ups and downs especially when Deji lost his job. I stood by him regardless, never complained, and when he got his current job through my dad’s referral, he was overjoyed and took me to Ibiza to celebrate. Oh…’’good times” I sighed while drinking my favourite wine. So where exactly did I go wrong? If only I could pinpoint a mistake I made, I’d feel more justified for blaming myself, but I could find none to explain why my husband has been sleeping with his childhood friend.
My heart shattered the day I found out. Deji had forgotten his phone at home and I heard it ring, I couldn’t reach it in time to answer and the caller left a very sexual text, suggesting the possibility of a wild night of adultery just like the previous one they had. I was livid, swore to confront him when he got home, packed a bag and was ready to walk out of my marriage. But I didn’t leave, I just sat there, drink in hand, waiting for him to get home, just like I am doing now, just like I do every day. Maybe he actually went to work this time, just maybe, but he walked in by 10pm and the first thing I see is the red lip stain on his collar.
