Marian paced up and down for the umpteenth time. She sighed as she took her seat in front of the huge wedding photograph in which she was smiling broadly with her childhood lover. Her memory went back to how blissful it was when it all started at Command Secondary school. He was then the Head boy and possessed qualities that charmed every girl. This love had persisted even till their university days until they finally got married. She smiled bleakly as she fought the tears that were collecting in her eyes.
Her husband, Chris, is an hardworking and wealthy businessman in his late thirties. He was a responsible husband and dad who never joked with his family until he met another young lady during one of his business trips and lost his senses. He suddenly became a drunkard, spendthrift and womanizer. He barely manages to fulfil his obligations to his family not to talk of providing emotional support for his wife and giving her conjugal rights.
She sighed again as her gaze drifted towards the family photograph with their two daughters, Vivian and Lois holding tightly to their dad and flashing their best smiles at the camera.
‘What could have happened over the years?’, Marian soliloquized.
‘What happened to the Chris I’ve always known all my life?’
‘what have I possibly done to deserve all this from him?’
She broke into uncontrollable tears.
Her case could be likened to that of someone who is in the middle of an ocean yet suffers from thirst. She could not explain her predicament to any outsider because no one would believe her story, or how do you explain a woman married to a man like Chris yet not being satisfied?
Worst of all, at the onset of the marriage, Chris made it clear that he wanted her to be a full housewife. She totally gave up her dreams and resigned her job as a magistrate despite the fact that she graduated with a first class in Law. ‘A costly mistake ‘, she muttered.
Marian wept even more.
She had thought of filing a divorce, but even that hurts her as memories from her parent’s broken marriage flood her heart. The court had ordered that her father should have full custody of the children and her stepmother maltreated them.
Nevertheless, she made her final decision – DIVORCE. She would start a new life with her kids.
